Maunu school
In Rusko, the energy consumption of Maunu School decreased by a third when nolla_E designed an optimal and cost-effective energy solution for the school.
During winter, Maunu School’s indoor temperature started to drop when the outdoor temperature fell below ten degrees below zero. It was determined that the school’s district heating connection was too small.
“We were asked to calculate the right-sized district heating connection for the school. However, we first conducted a simulation for the building, which revealed that instead of increasing the district heating connection, we could reduce the building’s heat demand,” says nolla_E’s CEO Nikolas Salomaa.
The simulation disclosed various aspects, including the heat lost from the building and the actual heating power requirement. Based on this simulation, an optimization is performed, compiling the best combination of various energy-efficient measures for the specific building.
The district heating connection did not need to be increased after all
“At Maunu School, we implemented several measures that improved the building’s energy efficiency. It wasn’t cost-effective to change the heat source, so it remained district heating. Now, the building requires 100 kW less heating power, and energy consumption has decreased from the original levels. At the same time, we were able to raise the school’s temperature to the appropriate level, eliminating the need to worry about a drop in indoor temperature during the winter months,” continues Salomaa.
It wasn’t cost-effective to change the heat source, so it remained district heating.
Economic savings were achieved when there was no need to increase the district heating connection size. Designing and expanding the district heating package would have cost approximately 50,000 euros due to the small district heating pipe. nolla_E’s optimized combination of measures cost 43,000 euros. Therefore, Maunu School realized savings of 7,000 euros right from the beginning.
With a larger connection, annual energy costs would have also increased. Through energy efficiency optimization, the school’s current connection size remained the same. Monitoring shows that, thanks to the optimized measures, the building’s total energy consumption decreased even more than initially estimated. The school saves about 14,000 euros annually in heating costs.
Rusko is satisfied with the results
Despite changes in Maunu School’s renovation plans and the inability to implement the original solutions as planned, the outcomes are positive, and Rusko views nolla_E’s consultancy positively:
“We have been pleased with the energy efficiency optimization at Maunu School. Additionally, we have used nolla_E’s services for planning in a few of our other projects,” says Markku Jessen-Juhler, the Head of Operations at Rusko Municipality.
In Rusko, ongoing energy efficiency work continually reinvests the savings from previous measures into new energy-efficient initiatives.
