Insights from the DataMust project were shared at the Smart Sustainable Cities Boosted by Data Sharing event
Last Thursday, February 6th, the Smart Sustainable Cities Boosted by Data Sharing event at Paasitorni brought together industry experts, researchers, and companies to discuss the significance of data sharing in developing sustainable urban solutions. In the picture (from the left): Anu Soukki (Sitowise), Retu Ylinen (City of Kuopio), Reijo Väliharju (Hiedanrannan Kehitys Oy), Jutta Suksi (VTT), Sixten Sandström (Business Finland).
The event provided a comprehensive overview of the latest innovations, ecosystem building, and the role of cities in leveraging data. Additionally, the DataMust project guidebook was launched during the event, summarizing key insights from the project and offering guidelines for developing data ecosystems. More on this later in the blog!
nolla_E’s contribution to the DataMust Project
DataMust was a project led by VTT, focusing on developing a new data market concept to accelerate the green transition in cities. The project aimed to create data ecosystems that foster smart and sustainable urban solutions.
nolla_E played a key role in the DataMust project, developing new ways to utilize energy data more efficiently. The project has enabled:
- Transition from individual simulations to daily forecasts based on weather predictions and electricity SPOT prices.
- More accurate demand forecasting and participation in electricity market reserve services – opening new business opportunities!
- Optimization of energy efficiency in the real estate sector, reducing costs and supporting low-carbon solutions.
In addition to nolla_E, the two-year DataMust project included participants such as VTT, Nokia, Loihde, Sitowise, Cozify, COBA International Oy, City of Espoo, City of Las Rozas (Spain), and SACYR. The project was part of Nokia’s Veturi program and received support from Business Finland.
Cities as builders of data ecosystems
VTT’s presentations highlighted the crucial role of cities in creating and developing data ecosystems. However, technical readiness alone is not enough – cities must also develop their expertise in ecosystem management and data-related regulations. VTT’s Senior Scientist Maija Federley commented on the significance of the project as follows:
“The DataMust project has been a truly fascinating joint learning journey to develop the necessary capabilities for advancing the data economy and data-driven services, with a particular focus on the needs of smart and sustainable cities. We have explored the topic from multiple angles, covering aspects such as technological solutions for data markets and data sharing, the role of cities in forming data ecosystems, the impact of data regulation on the business environment, and the development of concepts for energy optimization and demand response.
The project has brought together companies with diverse expertise and solutions, which has been highly valuable in our numerous workshops. These sessions have helped build a shared understanding and enhance skills by smoothly navigating between practical business challenges, evolving data spaces, and the theoretical research landscape of the data economy.
nollaE has been highly active in co-development within the project and has raised key questions essential to its own development work, benefiting the entire consortium. The company has boldly embraced the networking and commercial opportunities that have emerged during the project. It has been truly gratifying to see a small company so strongly committed to the project and the collaboration within it.”
City of Espoo’s Piia Wollstén (Director for Digital Services Development) introduced the potential role of cities as orchestrators of data ecosystems. Espoo acts as a coordinator, enabling ecosystem development by providing operating models, community rules, and structures. Additionally, the city serves as a neutral and trustworthy facilitator, considering the needs and perspectives of all stakeholders. This fosters balanced and sustainable ecosystem development.
Key takeaways from the event:
- Cities have the potential to be at the center of data ecosystems and act as enablers.
- Beyond technological infrastructure, new capabilities are needed, such as supporting innovation and accelerating business development.
- The development of smart cities is not solely the responsibility of cities but requires extensive collaboration between different stakeholders.

DataMust project guidebook published
During the event, the DataMust project guidebook DataMust: Data Markets for Sustainable Cities was launched, offering a comprehensive overview of the key elements of data sharing and ecosystem development.
The guidebook provides practical guidance on:
- Creating a vision
- Developing and operating ecosystems
- Regulatory frameworks and co-creation.
The guide serves as a valuable tool for anyone involved in the development of smart and sustainable urban data solutions.
