Domus Aboensis

The residential buildings under the ownership of Åbo Akademi Foundation witnessed a remarkable energy efficiency transformation. After a comprehensive energy renovation, their total energy consumption decreased to less than a quarter of previous levels. The expert team at nolla_E worked diligently to optimize energy efficiency for the properties located on Piispankatu in Turku, resulting in a substantial annual reduction of 58 tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions compared to previous figures. Additionally, these buildings have now achieved an impressive energy class A rating.

Mika Soinio, the property manager of the Åbo Akademi Foundation, is pleased with the results:
“We want to be pioneers in this field. We are a visible part of the city, and we aim to contribute to environmental efforts by striving to minimize emissions,” he explains.

The optimization of energy efficiency aimed to reduce energy consumption and, in turn, achieve financial savings. The foundation shares the accrued savings, for instance, in the form of research grants.
“The more we save on property expenses, the more we can support.”

While energy renovation measures had been previously undertaken in the building, they did not yield the expected savings.

nolla_E used its AI-based software to simulate and optimize the energy efficiency of the properties built in 1965. Through optimization, the software identified the most economically viable combination of measures from approximately 2,000 different options, significantly improving the energy efficiency of the buildings. As a result of implementing these measures, monitoring data reveals a substantial drop of up to 77 percent in total energy consumption. According to the Åbo Akademi Foundation, the energy efficiency optimization was successful, and the results speak for themselves.

“nolla_E’s software calculated the most economically viable solution for Domus Aboensis, which includes aspects like zoning, ventilation heat losses, and the use of seasonal heat storage. These changes improved living comfort, including summer cooling. As the system reaches optimal performance within the next couple of years, the savings will increase even further,” says nolla_E’s CEO, Nikolas Salomaa. This success underscores the significant benefits of energy efficiency and the positive impact on both finances and the environment.
